Extending Personal Care for Pregnant Women and Children in Rural Areas

Pregnancy is a crucial stage in every women’s life, during which the women need extra care, special attention, better food etc.

Mahatma Gandhi Said “India lives in villages”. It’s absolutely true. Majority of Indians, even today, live in tiny hamlets, in rural pockets of India. So, both the geographical as well as population parameters prove this.
Safe pregnancy and healthy child births everywhere

Mahatma Gandhi Said “India lives in villages”. It’s absolutely true. Majority of Indians, even today, live in tiny hamlets, in rural pockets of India. So, both the geographical as well as population parameters prove this.
The Villages

For generation, India was dominated by village conglomeration as far as the size and quantum are concerned. Despite rapid urbanization, the inhabitants of rural India love to continue to be there, mostly due to sentimental attachments.
The well-being… yesterday

India is basically endowed with rural backdrop. The prime occupations have been agriculture and its allied activities. With abundant natural resources, the village dwellers used to have a happy and contented living, whether they are engaged in agriculture and allied activities or the other handicrafts and professions. They had no tears… no fears… no worries and no tensions. But it’s all in the past!
The urbanization

The gradual and ever – growing defunct in the different village – based livelihoods prompted…rather forced the people there to migrate to urban areas. This began to happen when the villages suffered from.
THE NEGLECT OF VILLAGE LIFE HAS BEEN PHENOMENAL. AND DUE TO THIS THE HEAVENLY VILLAGE BACKDROP HAS BEEN REDUCED TO A BUNDLE OF SUFFERING.
The current pathetic plight

Today, there is no charm in village life. The comfortable living remains a once-upon-a-time sweet memory for the villagers. Leave alone the luxuries, the villages.
The women & the children-in nation building
Everyone in India knows the great Sanskrit quote
i.e. “The gods are delighted, where the women are honoured.”
The reality is contrary to this.
With the advancement of civilization, the position of women has been worsening, in contrast to the welfare measures and the publicity campaigns. In fact, like the village scenario, the role of women is importantly crucial in nation- building. For it’s the women, that moulds a family.
Likewise – the children! Today’s children are tomorrow’s citizens.
The happy the children are, the happy is the nation. The healthy the children are, the healthy is the nation. So it’s the children, that are instrumental, next to the women, informing or deforming a nation.
Their health
Today it is crystal clear that the health of the women and the children is so badly placed.
THERE ARE NO ADEQUATE FACILITIES, INFRASTRUCTURAL COMFROTS, MEDICINES AND OTHER SUPPORTING FACTORS.
The result is the untimely death, undernourishment, malnutrition, inadequate growth and so on. National Reports reveal, every day, numerous shocking findings, mirroring the alarming ill-health of both women and children.
Let’s look at the pregnant

Pregnancy is a crucial stage in every women’s life, during which the women need extra care, special attention, better food etc.
But due to various social, economic, sentimental and domestic reasons, the pregnant women, more so in rural sectors, are not receiving the desired attention. Thus crops up malnourishment, adversely affects both the mother and the baby. It is a sad plight that in rural areas, still many unscientific methods are growing strong and the country treatments are in vogue, to the detriment of the women.
The pre & post pregnancy care

All of us know that the women need extra care not only during the pregnancy, but in pre and post pregnancy stages also. Proper care and perfect maintenance make the women healthy and babies healthier. It’s in this context, much awaits to be done. Whether it be avoidance of rustic and unscientific country methods adopted for delivery or it be educating the people around and creating better awareness or it be the physical extension of social and financial help, every philanthropic heart has to respond and every kind hand has to rescue.
The renaissance of women & children

Nothing is Impossible.
Where there be a will, there will be a way out.
Whatever be the various factors, there has always been human milk of kindness flowing in the world, for the needy.
And with the voluntary helping mankind, we are very sure that there can be a virtual renaissance of women and children, especially in the rural India.
The resurrection of a great nation

India has been a great nation in the world ever since times immemorial. It’s unfortunate that there has been sluggish fall due to reasons whatever.
Let’s join hands!
Let’s do it again!!
Let’s redeem the glory!!!
Let’s do it for the rural women and children and make them happy, healthy and holistic.
AFTER ALL THEY ARE THE RAYS OF HOPE

Brief History

When Kasturba Gandhi, Gandhiji’s noble and true partner died in jail at the age of 75 on Mahasivrathri Day-22nd February 1944 the country decided to keep alive her memories, by raising a memorial fund of Rs. 75 lakhs, but the collections soared high and a purse of Rs. I crore 30 lakhs collected was presented to Gandhi on his birthday, 2nd October 1944 at Sevagram by late Smt. Sarojini Naidu. In April 1945 Gandhiji turned this fund into kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust with the object “to serve the women and children of smallest villages-not more than of 2000 population, through the main activities of education, health maternity and medical aid, cottage industries and moral and social upliftment”. He also stressed that ‘the work must be organized by women only’.
A Board of 23 trustees at the apex, the excutive committee and one women representative (Agent) in each state wedded to constructive work to administer and organize the work, were selected by him. The Agent in each state was to select and train good gramsevikas and through them organise the work in villages of their branches. The plan and method was framed by Gandhiji and Thakkar Bappa who were its first Chairman and General Secretary respectively of the Trust. Later on Sardar Patel and Sri G. V. Mavalankar placed it on a firm footing as its chairman respectively. Smt. Premlila V. Thackersey the present Chairman is trying her best to keep up the traditions.
Hyderabad could contribute only Rs.42,000/- (Rs. 56,000/- O. S.) Memorial Fund in 1944 – According to rules 75 % of the state collections were allotted to the field work in the respective states, with a condition to raise a certain percentage against the recurring expenses to be locally collected but we could mobilise more funds during the current work. Form 1954 to 1960 we had received a little grant from Gandhi Smarak Nidhi and on Matching basis from Central Social Welfare Board since 1956, and that is why we have pulled on for the past twelve years. Still we had to restrain ourselves from extending and even intensifying the work
The enclosed appendices will give an idea of our work churned out through various centres. Much field work was not possible in Hyderabad during Pre-police Action period, but as soon as I took up the responsibility-informally financed by various friends we undertook the heavy task of raising the morale of the people in districts during Razakar period and immediately after Police Action sent our workers with other volunteers to rescue Muslim women and children from districs as they were fear struck. We selected few workers and sent them for training in midwifery or gramseva to the adjacent provincial branches as per their mother tongue since 1946. So far we have trained 22 gramasevikas and midwives.
